Gerards Bakery Abruptly Shuts Down
Gerards Bakery, the Longmont, Colo.-based producer of breads and rolls for the foodservice industry, closed last week without paying its employees for the last two weeks of their employment, according to several published reports. The bakery apparently fell victim to rising commodity costs and a slowdown in the foodservice channel. more

Kraft to Expand Wisconsin Pizza Plant Kraft Foods broke ground this week to expand its pizza facility in Little Chute, Wis. by 100,000 sq. ft. and hire an additional 300 employees to meet demand for its products, according to the Northfield, Ill.-based company. Kraft expects the project to be completed by April 2009.

CSPI Convinces Sara Lee to Change Label Labels for Sara Lee's Soft & Smooth Made With Whole Grain White Bread will make clear that the product is 30% whole grain as part of a settlement agreement the Downers Grove, Ill.-based company has reached with the Center for Science in the Public Interest. Last December, the nonprofit nutrition watchdog group threatened to sue the company over the bread's labeling, which at the time, suggested that it had as much fiber as 100% whole wheat bread.
