Shearer's Breaks Ground for LEED Plant Shearer's Foods officially broke ground last week on its long-awaited Massillon, Ohio, production facility.
The facility will be Ohio's First LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold Certified Food Manufacturing Plant. The initial phase will house production and temporary staging areas in 63,936 sq. ft. of space. When fully completed, the $100 million project will have 210,000 sq. ft. of space, create at least 210 new jobs and eventually house the headquarters for the company, according to Shearer's Foods, headquartered in Brewster, Ohio.

IBIE to Strengthen International Reach The International Baking Industry Exposition (IBIE) will participate in the government's International Buyer Program in recognition of its role as a global marketplace for baking equipment, ingredients and supplies. The U.S. Department of Commerce recently selected IBIE 2010 to be a part of its program. Earlier this year, the IBIE committee indicated that it would seek to be a part of the program to boost its international attendance.
The next IBIE runs from Sept. 26-29, 2010, in Las Vegas. more

Some Slim Jim Production to Resume Recently, ConAgra plans to restart limited production of its Slim Jim jerky snacks at its Garner, Ga., plant in the near future, according to published reports.

Kerry Officially Opens R&D Center The Kerry Group recently opened up its $50 million Innovation and Technical Center in Beloit, Wis., to bring together its business management and shared services, research, development and applications teams under one roof. Participating in the inauguration of the new 250,000-sq.-ft., state-of-the-art center was Wisconsin's Gov. Jim Doyle, along with Kerry Group's chief executive officer Stan McCarthy, its board of directors, customers and employees.

AACC to Re-examine Audit System AACC International will tackle the complex and highly specialized area of third-party and customer audits from a global perspective. The event will be held on Sept. 15-16 in Baltimore during the AACC International Annual Meeting. The forum is included with full registration to the 2009 AACC International Annual Meeting, but is also open to non-annual meeting attendees.
