Sugar Shortage Raises Industry's Ire
Bakers and other sweet goods producers blame the "unprecedented" sugar shortage on import quotas. To alleviate the issue, they are asking the U.S. Department of Agriculture Sec'y. Thomas Vilsack to increase those quotas immediately. "The shortage does not have to happen," says the group, led by the American Bakers Association and Grocery Manufacturers Association. "The only reason markets are forecast to be so tight is the restrictive U.S. policy on sugar imports." more

ABA Providing 'Early Warning' on Potential Crisis
With the international futures price of sugar nearly double what it was last year, the American Bakers Association is firing an "early warning" shot. Health, Nutrition & the Obesity Crisis
Why are Americans So Fat?
Hank Cardello has been an executive and adviser to some of the largest food and beverage companies in the world. For years, he watched food manufacturers ignore healthy product ideas just to boost the bottom line. He witnessed restaurants and grocery stores transform into "supersize" outlets by offering larger and larger portions with multiple sides.  And he thinks food companies are not all to blame. More than three decades later, Cardello wrote Stuffed, An Insider's Look at Who's {Really} Making America Fat. Marina Mayer, SF&WB's managing editor, interviewed Cardello about health, nutrition and the nation's weight problem. more
