Long Company Confronts a Host of Issues Food safety, the fate of the U.S. economy and a number of burgeoning issues highlighted The Long Company's annual conference in Chicago.
Specifically, to pay for greater food safety, some bills in Congress are proposing user-fees that could result in bakeries paying a disproportionate greater share than others in the food industry, noted Lee Sanders, American Bakers Association's senior vice president, government relations and public affairs, during a industry forum on critical issues.

The Long Company Names Best Buns, Bread Winners Schwebel Baking and Gold Medal took home the top honors from The Long Company's annual bakery competition. Schwebel's bakery in Hebron, Ohio, received The Long Company's Best Premium Bun Gold Cup Annual Trophy awarded during The Long Company's Annual Conference in Chicago on Sept. 11. Gold Medal Bakery, Fall River, Mass., won The Long Company's Best Premium Bread Silver Cup Annual Trophy.

Aunt Millie's Bakeries Strike Ends Route sales representatives, loaders and merchandisers who went on strike against Aunt Millie's Bakeries earlier this month have approved contracts and returned to their jobs.
On Sept. 11, Teamsters local number 580 in Lansing, Mich., and local 154 in Jackson, Mich., approved a contract with the company. They returned to work the following day. Likewise, on Sept. 13, Teamsters local 51 in Detroit approved their contract and returned to their jobs the next day, the company noted in a statement. more
Obituary
Bakery Legend George Jones Passes Away George Young Jones died recently of cardiac failure in Austin, Texas. He was 83. Jones was well known by many industry veterans for his long tenure and accomplishments as an executive for such companies as the former Continental Baking Co. and American Bakeries. In later years he was a consultant and executive for Perfection Bakeries, now known as Aunt Millie's Bakeries, in Fort Wayne, Ind.
