Flowers Holds Town Hall Meeting at NYSE
In an extensive "Meet the Management Team" presentation at the New York Stock Exchange, top officials at Flowers Foods outlined information on the company's growth strategies, consumer trends, market share, new products, supply-side chain strategies and financial projections for 2010. Although Flowers Foods expects record growth this year, the Thomasville, Ga.-based company has been forced to step up its promotional activity recently to defend its share of the market, says George Deese, chairman, CEO and president. A cautiously optimistic Deese adds that he hopes such activity will return to more normal levels in the future.

Shiver to Become Flowers Foods' President In a much-expected move, Allen Shiver, who has been executive vice president and chief marketing officer of Flowers Foods, will become president of the Thomasville, Ga.-based company, effective Jan. 1. As president, Shiver will provide oversight for operations and will be more involved in strategic growth planning. He will continue to lead the company's national sales teams and marketing efforts. George Deese, Flowers Foods' chairman, CEO, and president, will continue to serve as chairman and CEO.

7-Eleven Adds Private Label Baked Goods To complement its steadily growing line of 7-Select
private label products as well as the fresh-baked daily items in its bakery case, some 5,700 participating 7-Eleven stores are adding 15 packaged bakery items under the company's private label brand. The new items include everything from mini-donuts, cupcakes and Danish to bear claws, snack pies and honey buns, according to the Dallas-based company. more

Acquisition Expands National Starch's Capabilities National Starch, a subsidiary of AkzoNobel, has recently completed the acquisition of Penford's Australian specialty grainwet milling and manufacturing facility based in Lane Cove and other intellectual property and assets of Penford's Australian specialty starch business. Terms were not disclosed. The acquisition will expand National Starch's regional capability to supply specialty corn starches into food applications in the Asia-Pacific region.

Takes a Lickin' and Keeps on Tickin' To celebrate the 50th anniversary of its ROLLFIX sheeter that is still in operation, Fritsch held a contest that attracted more than 100 bakers across the world. In the end, it found a 49-year-old system by German pizza baker Uwe Hug, who will receive a new ROLLFIX 600 from the company.

Kemin, OmniActive Settle Dispute Kemin Foods, L.C., OmniActive Health Technologies, Inc. and OmniActive Health Technologies, Ltd. have reached a settlement on a patent dispute. The parties agree that Kemin's U.S. Patent No. 5,382,714 titled "Process for Isolation, Purification and Recrystallization of Lutein from Saponified Marigold Oleoresin and Uses Thereof" and the reissues of that patent are valid and enforceable.
