DOE Names Franz an 'Energy Champion'
Franz Family Bakeries has received an Energy Champion award from the U.S. Department of Energy for achieving more than 250,000 million Btu in total energy savings or more than 15% total energy savings at its Portland, Ore., facility. To receive this recognition, Franz completed a Save Energy Now energy assessment with the DOE's Industrial Technologies Program (ITP) in 2008. more

Prepare for the 'Best Week in Baking'

Shelby Weeda Retires from King's Hawaiian
After nearly three decades working at King's Hawaiian, Shelby Weeda officially retired last month to pursue other opportunities. During Weeda's tenure as president, King's Hawaiian grew from a small regional company to a national brand with more than $110 million in annual revenue. According to Mark Taira, CEO and president of the Torrance, Calif.-based company, Weeda expanded the brand into new channels that created a momentum that "has provided an amazing path for our executive team." more

Bernie Bruinsma has been named director of special projects for Caravan Ingredients. In his new role, Bruinsma will assist R&D, business development and sales and marketing departments for the Lenexa, Kan.-based ingredient supplier. more

Organizers Set Show Dates for iba 2012
In an effort to avoid a conflict with Oktoberfest, iba 2012 will run Sept. 17-22 or right before the world's largest beer party in Munich, Germany begins. The German Bakers' Confederation and GHM Gesellschaft für Handwerksmessen note the World of Baking show will end on the first day of Oktoberfest. In the past, iba shows overlapped in part with the festival. After last year's show in Düsseldorf, iba organizers announced they wanted to make Munich the permanent home for the baking event, which runs every three years. more
