Wonder White Bread Fans 100% Whole-grain Bread
Company: Interstate Bakeries Corp., Kansas City
Introduced: July
Distribution: San Francisco; Sacramento, Calif.; Kansas City; Omaha, Neb.; Memphis, Tenn.; and Little Rock, Ark.
Suggested Retail: $2.39-$3.29 for a 1 lb., 8 oz. loaf
Ingredients: whole-wheat flour, water, high-fructose corn syrup, wheat gluten, yeast. Contains 2% or less of: Soybean oil, salt, calcium sulfate, extracts of malted barley and corn, honey, corn syrup, soy flour, dough conditioners (may contain: Sodium stearoyl lactylate, calcium dioxide, ethoxylated mono and diglycerides, dicalcium phosphate, mono and diglycerides and/or datem), yeast nutrients (may contain: Ammonium phosphate, ammonium chloride, ammonium sulfate and or/monocalcium phosphate), enrichment [vitamin E acetate, ferrous sulfate (iron), zinc oxide, calcium sulfate, niacin, vitamin D, pyridoxine hydrochloride (B6), folic acid, thiamine mononitrate (B1) and vitamin B12], wheat starch, cornstarch, maltodextrin, whey, vinegar, enzymes, calcium propionate (to retain freshness), soy lecithin. FYI: Fiberphobes have no need to fear! The nation’s No. 1 bread brand is going against the grain with its 100% whole-wheat loaf that looks and tastes just like white bread. The recipe includes a wheat variety that doesn’t taste as grainy as whole, red-wheat flour, maintaining that spongy, chewy texture consumers love. But since it’s made from 100% whole wheat, it now packs three times the fiber of regular white bread.
Sara Lee Soft & Smooth Whole-Grain White Bread

Suggested Retail: $1.99 for a 20-oz. loaf
Ingredients: Enriched bleached flour [wheat flour, malted barley flour, niacin, iron, thiamine mononitrate (vitamin B1), riboflavin (vitamin B2), folic acid], water, whole grains [whole-wheat flour, brown rice flour (rice flour, rice bran)], high-fructose corn syrup, whey, wheat gluten, yeast, cellulose. Contains 2% or less of each of the following: Honey, calcium sulfate, vegetable oil (soybean and/or cottonseed oils), salt, butter (cream, salt), dough conditioners (may contain one or more of the following: mono- and diglycerides, ethoxylated mono- and diglycerides, ascorbic acid, enzymes, azodicarbonamide), guar gum, calcium propionate (preservative), distilled vinegar, yeast nutrients (monocalcium phosphate, calcium sulfate), corn starch, natural flavor, beta-carotene (color), Vitamin D3, soy lecithin, soy flour.
FYI: Just call Sara Lee’s latest whole-grain white bread introduction “stealth health.” Its white bread got a nutritional makeover, resulting in a product that is still soft, smooth and white, but best of all, delivers 8 gm. of whole grains in every two-slice serving. It also is packed with 3 gm of fiber (the same as 100% whole-wheat bread) and contains no trans fat! It’s a slice of health heaven.
