What’s the latest in supermarket food products?
Products featured at this year's Grocery Innovations Canada show in Toronto included Hot Booster, a container that heats soup or drinks when shaken, and Pizza Cornetto, which is pizza in the shape of an easy-to-carry cone. The pizza topping-filled cones have already been introduced in Canadian restaurants and consumers may soon be able to make them at home. “Pizza cones launched about five years ago and are going crazy all over Europe,” says Vince Pettinicchio of MSU Foods. Pizza Cornetto’s package holds the cone upright while being heated. Could cones become the new pizza pocket?
Also on display were E6 Energy Strips, which melt on the tongue to deliver the benefits of an energy drink. More food for thought: The grocery expo showcased food processors’ response to Canada's aging, single and diverse population, as well as consumers' selective buying habits, with new products that deliver health and wellness, convenience and smaller portion sizes. Watch for more functional foods, heat-and-serve items for busy families and singles, and an ever-expanding array of quick prepare Asian foods.
Sustainability is coming on strong as well, as an assortment of environmental, recyclable and biodegradable dry goods and packaging were displayed.
