Pirate Brands, maker of Pirate’s Booty rice-and-corn puffs and other all-natural snacks, is offering consumers healthy snacking tips just in time for the Super Bowl XLVII on Feb. 3.
Emily Whelan Anschlowar, a registered dietician and in-house nutrition expert at the Sea Cliff, N.Y., company, created the following healthier swaps for a party that’s sure to score points with consumers’ families and friends. “Big game day is the biggest calorie fest of the year behind Thanksgiving,” says Anschlowar. “The average person will consume an entire day’s worth of calories in just three hours. Instead of your typical big game spread that is high in fat and calories, try the following tips that won’t leave your guests feeling sacked.”
- Anschlowar recommends replacing regular fried potato chips with better-for-you alternatives like Pirate’s Booty, which has half the fat of and fewer calories than potato chips. Pirate’s Booty is gluten-free and trans-fat-free, and made in a peanut- and tree-nut-free facility, so it can be enjoyed by the whole team. - Pizza can be a great choice, especially when it’s loaded with veggies and made with a heart-healthy whole wheat crust.
- Mustard, low-fat cheese and lean meats like turkey and chicken make for a healthier sub sandwich. Also, pile on those veggies!
- Swapping out ground beef for a leaner meat like ground turkey in chili cuts down on fat intake.
- For S’mores, substitute milk chocolate for dark chocolate to gain the benefits of antioxidants.
- A fruit platter served with vanilla yogurt for dipping is also a great healthy choice.
