Sanders Bumpy Cake

Sanders Fine Chocolates’ Bumpy Cake turned 100 years old in April. The Clinton Township, Mich., company is celebrating all year long with local promotions in its 11 Michigan stores and nationally through participating retailers and distributors.

Chocolate Bumpy Cake boxes will be adorned with a celebratory emblem. Sanders is also providing freezer clings to retailers and distributors looking to highlight the cake’s 100th birthday.

The Bumpy Cake was born in 1913, when Sanders opened its bakery division and started making unique cakes with its signature buttercream icing. One cake its bakers co-created with the company’s confectionary division was a chocolate layer cake that had buttercream piping on top and was coated in a rich fudge topping. The cake was later named “Bumpy Cake” by local customers asking for the “cake with the bumps.”

Today, Sanders Bumpy Cake comes in three sizes and in three flavors—Raspberry Bumpy, Vanilla Buttercream Bumpy and Caramel Spice Bumpy. Sanders baked goods have been sold in the Detroit area for generations and have established a national presence over the last few years.
