Equipment Snapshot: JLS Automation’s Osprey robotic case packer now handles flexible packages, including pillow bags, standup (quad-type or doyen), re-sealable pouches and more. With the robot’s ability to rotate the packages, virtually any case pack pattern is possible, from basic stacking to horizontal nesting, according the company. Using vision-guided technology, the case packer automatically orientates packages when picking and prior to casing for jam-free operation. A flexible end-of-arm tooling (EOAT) means quicker changeovers, the ability to rotate/orientate packages on the fly and a more sanitary design. A new pinch belt design further facilitates changeovers and sanitation. The Osprey features single or dual ABB IRB 360 FlexPicker robots (8 kilogram payload). System speed for a dual-head Osprey is 150+ packages per minute, depending on bag size and weight.
