Schools have waited more than a year to find out how the sale of potato chips, candy bars, sodas and similar snacks to students will be restricted. The rules on food sold outside traditional cafeteria meals are a key part of the first major overhaul of school food by the U.S. Department of Agriculture in more than three decades.
The new proposed U.S.D.A. standards draw on recommendations from the Institute of Medicine, existing voluntary standards already implemented by thousands of schools around the country and healthy food and beverage offerings already available in the marketplace. Once the proposal is published in the Federal Register, there will be a 60-day comment period. The issue will also be discussed at the American Bakers Association Food Technical Regulatory Affairs Committee (ABA FTRAC) meeting Feb. 25-26 in Atlanta.
