Tic Tac Fans: Tic Tac Shakeless isn’t such a crazy idea

Company pulls April Fools’ Day prank on its fans

By Bernie Pacyniak
April 2, 2014

Tic Tac Shakeless

When Tic Tac mints announced plans to introduce a new “Tic Tac Shakeless” yesterday on Twitter, the company probably wasn’t expecting its fans to actually like the idea.

Claiming, “the new twist on one of the world’s most iconic packs is custom-engineered to stop the shake so friends and family won’t be tempted to ask consumers to share,” the company posted pictures of the orange flavored Tic Tacs in a little pack filled with orange bubble wrap inside, insulating the Tic Tacs to stop them from making any noise.

But the idea was just clever enough that fans actually seemed to like it.

As Bianca Carnerio wrote, “All my fav things: candy & bubble wrap!” Meanwhile, Wayne A. Walls wrote, “@TicTacUSA I could seriously use this.  I was at a golf tournament this past weekend and had to walk very slowly sometimes!”

The only problem was, the “Tic Tac Shakeless” mints weren’t real. As Tic Tac USA says, “April Fools!’

This is the second year that Tic Tac has done something for April Fools' Day. In 2013 they launched a fake pizza-flavored Tic Tac.

“We knew we wanted to do something a little different for 2014.,” says Todd Midura, category manager for Tic Tac mints at Ferrero U.S.A., Inc.  “The idea of re-designing one of the world’s most recognizable packs to prevent the shake that people know and love provided a unique opportunity for us to have a little bit of fun with our fans.”

But fans didn’t dismiss the concept outright, even when the April Fools’ Day announcement was made.

“Overall, the response was positive, some laughing along with the joke and others lightheartedly expressing disappointment that the product did not exist,” Midura says.

Fans such as Nichole Marie Hoecker, who wrote on Facebook, “That wouldn't be a bad idea. It's a shame it's only a prank.”

And another fan, Tajah C. Moore’s, echoed Hoecker’s sentiments on the social media site. “Just when I thought America was actually getting somewhere, I get fooled again,” Moore said on a post sharing a picture of Tic Tac Shakeless orange mints.

Tic Tac says it is planning to release a real new flavor soon, so stay tuned for some actual news from the mint maker. And who knows, maybe one day, Tic Tac Shakeless will be more than just an April Fool’s Day prank. Afterall, who really wants to share their Tic Tacs — especially the orange ones? Am I right?
