Majlen thought she’d initially try her hand at confections for a short period, and then pursue her dreams of going abroad. But a funny thing happened on the way to the candy factory — the young woman found herself loving the work.

The Hershey Co. has acquired 80 percent of Shanghai Golden Monkey Food Joint Stock Co., Ltd. (SGM), a privately held confectionery company based in Shanghai, China.

“One of the things that’s the most difficult about the private investment business is that you have to let go of the things that mean the most to you,” says Hendrik J. Hartong III, senior managing partner at Brynwood Partners.

The company’s new space at 1628 Fatherland St. in Nashville, Tenn., is a renovated 19th century grocery store in East Nashville.

Right from the start, Nasau Candy sought differentiation. When the family bought Nassau Candy (then, a candy and tobacca distributor) in 1984, one of the first things they did was discontinue selling cigarettes.

The ad features a traditional night-before-Christmas scene, but with a quirky twist.
