Jelly Belly says eat your 'peas' and 'carrots'

January 14, 2011

Jelly Belly has created a new type of candy that looks more like a side dish to your dinner than a dessert.

It’s a Peas & Carrots mellocreme mix which was recently introduced at the 2011 Winter Fancy Food Show. The product combines the look of a classic vegetable dish with the taste of candy.

The “baby carrots” are mellocreme candy in orange sherbet flavor and the “peas” are green apple flavor.

“We tried a number of different flavors to see what would work.” says Tori Holt, director of communications at Jelly Belly Candy Company. “Obviously trying to match flavor with colors is an important aspect of the process…and after the taste test these two were the most flavorful and satisfying.”

The whimsical idea thecompany came up with plays off of the nostalgic side dish of peas and carrots. The candy will come packaged in a clever “can” to further the illusion.

Jelly Belly, which has been producing candy corn for more than a century since 1898, was one of the first companies to introducing seasonal candy corns.

“We’ve always had a series of mellocremes in our seasonal lines so this is one more extension of the novelty aspect and shape of the whole mellocreme category,” says Holt. “The challenge becomes what can we do that’s new and different that still builds on our traditions.”

Peas & Carrots Mix is dairy-free, gluten-free and certified OU Kosher. They will begin to ship to stores nationwide by February.
