Grace Johnson slips a coin into a Chicago candy slot machine in 1929. Coin-operated machines made candy bars — with their uniform size and single-serve sanitary packaging — convenent and accessible. General-line candies (gum drops, taffy kisses, caramels, peppermints and so on), by contrast, were mostly limited to sales in grocery and chain stores.
