Lactose-intolerant people now will be able to enjoy the one thing everyone is put on earth to love — milk chocolate.

Barry Callebaut, a world-leading manufacturer of high-quality cocoa, is launching a new lactose-free milk chocolate, which will be sold in Europe first.

The new chocolate will use skimmed milk powder with low-lactose content, making it possible to use more milk powder to mimic the milky taste in chocolate. The company also is taking special production measures, such as more specific production line cleaning, to eliminate the risk of lactose contamination.

Lactose intolerance affects up to 70% of adults worldwide, according to the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). The condition can cause side effects including abdominal pain, bloating, diarrhea or nausea when lactose is consumed.

Barry Callebaut is a Zurich-based manufacturer of high-quality cocoa and chocolate, and operates around 40 facilities in 27 countries.
