Cargill Cocoa & Chocolate’s 2018-2019 Sustainability Progress Report highlights the company’s efforts to improve transparency and the lives of cocoa farmers in Brazil, Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana and Indonesia.
Two-thirds of respondents expect an increase in healthy, better-for-you and/or functional ingredient operations in the next 12 months, by a 28 percent increase on average.
Chocolate offers an opportunity to indulge, but it also serves as a palette for flavor innovation and provides an entry point into where and how cocoa is grown, harvested and processed.
Hershey said it’s expecting to face a number of challenges as a result of the current COVID-19 global pandemic, including a reduced demand for products, reduced availability of its products, and issues with the supply chain, among other things.
In the 2018/2019 Olam global cocoa supply chain, the companies identified 7,059 cases of child labor in the sustainability programs run with its branded partners.
The complexity of child labor means one intervention will never be enough – what is required is a broad range of preventative and remedial actions, both at the individual, community and national level.

Fairtrade International says sales of Fairtrade-certified cocoa from Côte d’Ivoire in the fourth quarter of 2019 increased farmers’ earnings by approximately $15.1 million compared to non-Fairtrade cocoa.
