Asian candy trends abound at Expo

Companies from China, Japan, and Thailand share their sweets and snacks at this year’s expo

By Alison Soley
July 27, 2015

While this year’sSweets & Snacks Expo hosted companies and products from all over the world, a noticeable number came from various parts of Asia.

And the sweets and snacks they featured are both unique and tasty.

First up are Black Thunder chocolate bars, made with crushed plain and cocoa biscuits covered in milk chocolate, launched in 1994 from Yuraku Confectionery Co. Ltd, headquartered in Tokyo.

It still is the company’s most popular product, with annual sales at $2.5 billion in 2013.

Hiro Tome, general manager, EIWA America, Inc. commenting on the conception of the product, says that while “chocolate is typically a western candy,” Yuraku has found a market for their Black Thunder and Big Thunder chocolate bars.

They focus on creating a delicate and fine chocolate product with less sugar.

Meanwhile, the best selling gummy candy in Japan, Pure Gummy, is now available in the United States. These little heart-shaped gummies are enhanced with vitamin C and made with real fruit juice. Kanro Co., Ltd., the manufacturer, gets their name from “kanro”, meaning, “sweet drops fallen from heaven.”

And from Thailand comes Thai Kameda, Co., Ltd.’s line of tasty rice snacks, including a glutinous rice cracker and jasmine rice cracker. Their branch in the US, Kameda USA, Inc., produces Kameda crisps. These come in flavors such as Sweet Chili, Wasabi, BBQ, and Cajun. They are gluten-free, non GMO, and contain nothing artificial.

These are just a few of the several companies from Thailand, Japan, and China that made an appearance at the Sweets & Snacks Expo, and are making waves in the international market.
