Massachusetts retailer relaunching Sky Bars

Former NECCO brand purchased by owner of “contemporary general store.”

Sky Bar
November 14, 2019

SkyBar Confectionary Co. has announced that the iconic Sky Bar candy bar is now in production and available for sale.

The Sky Bar brand was purchased by Louise Mawhinney, owner of Duck Soup in Sudbury, Mass. in the September 2018 auction of the assets of the former New England Confectionery Co. (NECCO).

Introduced by NECCO in 1938 with a skywriting advertising campaign, Sky Bar’s technological innovation was its four distinctly different centers — caramel, vanilla, peanut and fudge.

“We hope Sky Bar fans will love the bar as much as we do: we went back to the 1970s recipe for a richer chocolate and maintained local roots by sourcing peanuts from Teddie and incorporating Fluff into our vanilla section,” Mawhinney said. “We are proud to be making the Sky Bar in Massachusetts, which is its home.”

Well known throughout New England, Sky Bar has appeared in movies over the years, and its sign was one of only six that lit up on VE Day in 1945 when the blackout in Times Square was lifted. Sky Bar was produced by NECCO until the company’s closure in May 2018.

Sky Bars are being manufactured in a showcase facility right next to Duck Soup, a “contemporary general store” known for its proprietary coffee blends, and curated wine and cheese selections.

“You can see Sky Bars being made,” Mawhinney said. “Think of a craft beer maker, except this is a candy bar.”

Orders for Sky Bars are only being taken at Duck Soup or online, but the company intends to expand availability across the country early next year.
