Hershey 'Drops' new candy

January 19, 2011

The Hershey Co. has introduced a new bite-sized candy dubbed Hershey’s Drops.

The candy comes in two flavors, Hershey’s Milk Chocolate Drops and Hershey’s Cookies ‘n’ Creme Drops, and features a light, shiny finish instead of a candy shell, which the company claims will mean no mess for candy-eaters.

The Drops will be sold in 8-oz. resealable, stand-up pouches, and the Milk Chocolate Drops also will come in a King Size 2.1-oz. package.

Separately, the Hershey Co. announced last week that it is partnering with a nearby university in an effort to expand the school’s food science program.

Hershey has donated $90,000 to Harrisburg University of Science and Technology in Harrisburg, Pa., to equip a new sensory science and consumer research laboratory and to cover other start-up costs during the program’s first two years. It also will collaborate with the school and its students to do consumer testing at the site.

“We thought it was a great opportunity to partner with a local industry,” said Rene Massengale, director of the food, science and technology center at Harrisburg. “We are really grateful.”

Massengale said the lab, which is expected to be completed in February, will allow students to gather consumer feedback with techniques like taste-testing, and also will allow for testing marketing messages.
