Lufkin, Texas-based Atkinson Candy Co. and its packaging design partner, The Vital Design Group, have been selected from more than 2,000 entries as winners of the annual Graphic Design USA 2017 American Package Design Awards.

According to Graphic Design USA, the “annual competition celebrates attractive graphics, but more importantly, the power of design to forge an emotional link with the buyer at the moment of truth.”

In partnering with The Vital Design Group last year to create a new line of caramels and Halloween packaging, the company aimed for a fun, fresh and updated look.

“We were looking to break out of the nostalgia niche with these items and the creative team at Vital Design did an exceptional job of doing just that,” says Sarah Atkinson, marketing manager. “Our customers have responded to these new items with such excitement. Winning this award is definitely the perfect icing on the cake.”

The winning designs include the newly launched “Caramels by Atkinson” in caramel apple and pumpkin spice flavors, as well as a Halloween lineup of Chick-O-Stick Ghosts, Peanut Butter Bar Skeleton Bones and Crunchy Peanut Butter Eyeballs.

“Being recognized for our packaging efforts is very special and shows we’re moving in the right direction in the fight for brand relevance,” says Eric Atkinson, president.

The new items will officially launch in May at the annual Sweets & Snacks Expo in Chicago.
