New Zealand-based chocolate brand Whittaker’s has turned to Coveris Neuwied to brighten up its packaging in time for the holiday season.

Whittaker’s was in search of an innovative, more sustainable packaging solution for its pre-packed chocolate bars that would still offer strong point-of-sale presence and end-user experience.

Coveris provided a bag made from fully recyclable mono-paper, simplifying the recycling process while offering a premium look and ease of use. Coveris showed the brand the first test packs a few weeks after the order was submitted, despite the long geographical distance.

“Since the product is already pre-packed, there was no need for adding additional barrier layers to protect the chocolate bars from sunlight or oxygen, which simplified and accelerated the production process,” said Thomas Kluck, sales manager.

After several trials, the final premade paper bags were constructed with double-coated, 120 gsm Kraft paper and are printed in seven colors using rotogravure technology. The final packaging stands out on shelves thanks to special heat seal and gloss varnish, as well as gold foil embossing.

Besides maintaining the premium look of the brand, another benefit is that the new bags are available in various sizes, allowing easier future changes or seasonal offerings.

“We are happy to share our chocolate treats in these special gift-wrapped bags in time for Christmas, hoping they will please both our customers and the environment,” a Whittaker’s representative said.
