Eight in 10 Americans (81 percent) think cannabis should be legalized, according to a new survey conducted by the market research and technology firm Toluna.

Toluna surveyed 1,000 people in the U.S. on their perceptions around tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) — the cannabis compound that provides a “high” — and cannabidiol (CBD), which is non-psychoactive but is believed to offer relaxation and relief from stress, pain and anxiety.

The research fim found two-thirds of Americans (66 percent) are comfortable with having THC products on the market. Furthermore, 78 percent of American consumers are familiar with CBD, and more than half (54 percent) consider themselves to be “very comfortable” with them.

More than 80 percent (83 percent) of Americans have already purchased or are thinking about purchasing CBD products. For those who are thinking about using CBD, most want to reduce stress (61 percent), anxiety (59 percent) and want help with muscle pain (50 percent) and depression (43 percent).

Of those that already use CBD products, nearly 70 percent (68 percent) are using them on a weekly basis. Among the top CBD products consumers are buying are:

  • Edibles: 57 percent
  • Skin/healthcare: 48 percent
  • Drinks: 39 percent
  • Infused products (shampoos, toothpaste): 34 percent
  • Cooking oil: 34 percent
