Not-So-Forbidden Fruits

Not-So-Forbidden Fruits

An apple a day might keep the doctor away, but for some kids, fear of fruit is greater than fear of the family physician. For parents who are trying to get their children to fill those much-needed five servings of fruit and vegetables a day, manufacturers — including the makers of childhood fave Fruit Roll-Ups — now offer flavorful new items that are natural, organic and low in fat and calories.
Below is a sampling of the latest from this growing category, which today competes even with cookies, crackers and potato chips. When it comes to share of stomach, all snacks are fair game.
Smooosh and Serve
Not only are Stretch Island Fruit Co.’s FruitaBü Smoooshed Fruit Twirls made with 90% fruit juice and real fruit, but they’re also certified organic by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
The snacks are available in packs of eight or single-serve portions that fit into pockets, lunch boxes and backpacks, and come in three kid-favorite flavors — Strawberry, Apple and Grape — as well as Apricot and Raspberry. Each of the Twirls equals one serving of fruit and contains no added sugar.
“Our mission is to help kids eat more fruit,” says FruitaBü  spokesperson John Henry Siedlecki. “FruitaBü Smoooshed Fruit Twirls transform pure fruit into pure fun, giving moms a wholesome alternative to help ensure their kids get real fruit nutrition in addition to fresh fruit options.”
For further details about FruitaBü Twirls, as well as FruitaBü Flats, visit www.FruitaBu.com.
Ripped Fruit Fuel
For kids who like to crunch, General Mills’ fruit ripples are just the trick. Each crunchy dried snack — available in Strawberry Apple and Cinnamon Apple varieties — contains one serving of fruit, no fat and just 50 calories, making them both delicious and nutritious.
To celebrate the launch of fruit ripples, General Mills has partnered with The Studio at Target to create the “Apple of My Eye Sweepstakes.” The Grand Prize winner receives a trip for four to the Big Apple, aka, New York City, along with a family photography package and a free sitting and 8x10-in. print from The Studio at Target. The prize is worth more than $5,700.
Visit www.FruitRipplesSweepstakes.com for more information.
Stop, Drop and Roll
Betty Crocker’s naturally flavored Blastin’ Berry Hot Colors Fruit Roll-Ups are an excellent source of Vitamin C and contain just 1 g of fat per 50-calorie serving. The bright hues of this fruity snack make them even more enticing to fun-loving, color-conscious kids.
To learn more about this product and other Fruit Roll-Ups, including Flavor Wave and Tropical Tie-Dye, visit www.GeneralMills.com or www.BettyCrocker.com.
