Natural is the trend this summer, especially in the delectable world of chocolate, with the introduction of Russell Stover and Whitman’s new organic line. These sweet new options are targeted to those chocolate lovers who seek healthier options for satisfying their sweet tooth. Mark Sesler, senior vice president/chief marketing officer, offers, “We foresaw the opportunity in sugar-free nearly 10 years ago; we capitalized on the phenomenon that was low-carb; we continued the innovation with our Weight Watchers co-branded line of chocolates, and now we see the potential in organic.” He adds, “‘Better for you’ is defined by being USDA-sanctioned organic, and ‘tastes good’ is assured by our brand names.”

The World’s First Liquid Chocolate Bar
Lava Chocolate, LLC
(888) LAVA-411

Everyone knows the best part of baking with Mom is getting to lick the bowl. Somehow, the rich mess of thick chocolate batter never ceases to delight our taste buds — or leave our faces sticky sweet, for that matter. Luckily for chocolate lovers, there is a new way to indulge in the gooey goodness with the world’s first liquid chocolate bar.
The Original Lava Bar, no doubt named for its smooth liquid consistency, recently oozed its way out of the product development lab and into mouths with its worldwide debut at the Los Angeles Farmer’s Market. Contained in a foil-lined flexible film, Lava Bar chocolate is easy to tear open thanks to its perforated top. The squeezable, mess-free treat is ideal for school lunches, movie theaters and sporting events, and there is no need to worry about the chocolate melting on a hot day since it is already liquid.
What began as an at-home hobby became a perfected recipe for chocolate-enthusiast and creator, Kenneth J. Berke, after three years of experimenting with ingredients. “You’re really getting several products in one,” explains Burke. “If you can resist just eating this new liquid chocolate bar directly from its package, it’s absolutely great when added to milk shakes, poured over ice cream or served with fresh fruit.”
Each preservative-free, certified-kosher, Lava Bar contains 280 calories, 14 grams of fat and no trans fats. Currently available for online purchase, Berke is targeting convenience and grocery channel retailers as well. The suggested retail price is $1.99 each, and Lava Chocolate, LLC, will donate a portion of its net income to leukemia research in memory of Berke’s father.
