Private brand sales hit a new record last year, jumping 11.3% to $228.6 billion in all outlets in the U.S. for the 52 weeks ending January 1 versus the prior year.
The tortilla chip category enjoyed a healthy boost in sales during the past year, in spite of the fact that the numbers of bags placed in shopping carts barely budged—thanks to the price increases seen throughout the grocery store and elsewhere.
The U.S. snack industry established strong roots during the first half of the 20th century. Retail channel diversification, ingenious equipment engineering, and an increasingly mobile American public hungry for snacking adventure all contributed to the boom.
