Automated changeovers, servo-driven systems, and machines designed for both legacy and emerging formats are driving innovation in the packaging industry in 2025.
According to the 2025 Packaging State of the Industry infographic released by PMMI, The Association for Packaging and Processing Technologies, the U.S. packaging machinery market reached $11.3 billion in sales in 2024 and is forecast to grow by 2.2% in 2025. Canada’s market reached $1.2 billion in 2024 and is expected to grow by 0.8% this year.
Manufacturers continue to prioritize compact equipment that fits existing plant footprints, handles delicate materials, and is easy to operate and maintain. Industry challenges include labor shortages, AI integration, sustainability demands, and shifting U.S. policy.
Hiring and retention remain key concerns for both OEMs and end users. While AI and automated systems offer potential efficiency gains, many companies are focused on practical solutions for immediate operational needs. Workforce development programs are one area of increased investment.
Predictive maintenance is another tool with potential, though adoption has been slow due to cost concerns and reliance on existing preventative routines. Some OEMs report improved efficiency when predictive systems are integrated into human-machine interfaces with actionable alerts. Preventative maintenance remains widely used, offering more control over timing and cost.
Sustainability continues to influence equipment design and purchasing decisions, though companies are balancing environmental goals with financial and operational constraints. Tariffs and evolving U.S. policies are contributing to market volatility and planning uncertainty.
“End-user customers are also increasingly challenged by high SKU counts, innovative packaging formats, and the need to minimize downtime,” says Jorge Izquierdo, vice president, market development, PMMI. “Solutions for all the pressing challenges identified in the 2025 State of the Industry report can be found at PACK EXPO Las Vegas.”
PACK EXPO Las Vegas 2025 will take place September 29–October 1 at the Las Vegas Convention Center. The event marks its 30th year and is expected to host 35,000 professionals from more than 40 vertical markets, with over 100 educational sessions and networking opportunities.
