Anyone who has ever gathered for a night of cards, board games, or other engaging entertainment knows that the snacks are almost as important as (if not more than) the fun activities at hand. Cookies, crackers, cheeses, and other nibbles often play center stage, with the gamers enjoying the foods long after the last hand of euchre is played or the final trivia question answered.

That concept helped fuel the creation of Crackerology, a growing food brand that offers ready-made snack kits that are primed for easy, elevated snacking for game nights or other social occasions. To learn more about Crackerology and its snack kit innovations, we connected with Janine Akers, the company’s chief crackerologist.

Jenni Spinner: Could you please tell me a little bit about you and life leading up to the creation of Crackerology?

Janine Akers: I’ve always had an entrepreneurial spirit. Before Crackerology, I built and owned a HIPAA healthcare technology company. That experience taught me a lot about running a business, managing growth, and building something from the ground up. But I’ve also always been passionate about food, entertaining, and creating experiences that bring people together. So when the opportunity came to combine entrepreneurship with something creative and joyful, I was all in.

JS: Then, as legend has it, the idea was borne from a night where the three founders were playing cards, enjoying libations, and snacking on snacks. What snacks were you enjoying? How did that fun night lead to the Crackerology idea?

JA: It really did all start with a fun night in. The three of us (DeAnne, Shelley, and I) were playing cards, enjoying some drinks, and, of course, snacking. We had crackers, cheese, some preserves, and whatever else we could find in the pantry. Somewhere between the laughter and competition, we started talking about how much we loved that kind of casual entertaining—but also how much work it can be to pull together the perfect spread. That’s when the idea hit: what if we created a way to make gourmet snacking and entertaining easier, beautiful, and shelf-stable? That was the spark for Crackerology.

JS: Please tell us about the early days, and what roles each of the three founders/partners brought to the table.

JA: From the beginning, we each brought something unique to the table—literally and figuratively! I come from an entrepreneurial background, so I naturally gravitated toward operations, big-picture strategy, and building out the business. DeAnne’s background is in branding and design, she’s worked for large companies like H&R Block and GEHA, so she’s the creative mind behind how Crackerology looks and feels. Shelley works in M&A for banks, and her financial and strategic expertise has been invaluable as we’ve grown. The combination of those skills really helped us build a strong foundation from day one.

JS: Now Crackerology is out in the world—could you please tell us about the products?

JA: Crackerology is all about making gourmet entertaining simple and fun. We create both savory and sweet kits that include everything you need, our signature crackers, cheese or spreads, and delicious toppings, to build a beautiful appetizer or dessert board in minutes. They’re shelf-stable, so they’re perfect for gifting, travel, or impromptu get-togethers. Our goal is to make people feel like they can host, gift, or indulge without stress, just open, assemble, and enjoy.

JS: Where are you selling the snack kits, in which retail outlets, and who do you see as your key customer groups?

JA: We’re in a variety of retail outlets nationwide, specialty grocery stores, wineries, breweries, and boutique gift shops, and we also sell online and on Amazon. Our customers range from foodies and entertainers to gift-givers who want something unique and high-quality. We also have a growing base of corporate clients who love sending Crackerology as thoughtful, ready-to-enjoy snack gifts for employees or clients.

JS: What’s next for Crackerology—can you tell us about new products, new retail partnerships, etc.?

JA: We’re always innovating! We recently launched our Flatbread Bites line; these are perfect for charcuterie boards and pair beautifully with wine or dips. We’re also expanding our retail partnerships and working on new seasonal flavors and gift options. Our goal is to keep surprising people with creative, high-quality products that make snacking and entertaining effortless.

JS: Finally, do you have a favorite product among your offerings, and what wine or drink would you pair with it?

JA: That’s a tough one! But if I had to choose, I’d say the Red Wine & Rosemary Appetizer Kit is my personal favorite; it’s elegant and savory, with just the right amount of flavor complexity. It pairs perfectly with a Pinot or a bold red blend. On the sweet side, I can never resist the Lemon Blueberry Kit with a glass of bubbly; it’s such a fun, celebratory combination.
