Hummingbird Doughnuts

Fisher Nuts, Elgin, IL, and Alex Guarnaschelli, a celebrity chef and executive chef at New York City’s Butter restaurant, have announced the winner of the second annual “My Fresh Twist” Recipe contest. Shauna Harvey of Roy, UT, received the grand prize for her Hummingbird Cake Doughnuts.

Fisher Nuts, a John B. Sanfilippo & Son Inc. brand, invited recipe enthusiasts to submit an original recipe featuring nuts at www.myfreshtwist.com for a chance to win a grand prize trip for two to New York City to meet Guarnaschelli. Fisher fans voted to select the top 15 finalists. From there, the winning recipe was selected by a panel of judges, including Guarnaschelli.

More than 865 recipes were entered into the contest. Recipes had to include pecans, walnuts or almonds and were judged based on their originality, integration of nuts, taste and visual appeal.

“Shauna really took this contest to the next level by using ingredients in new and interesting ways,” says Guarnaschelli. “The combination of the banana and pineapple, as part of the batter really stood out to me. The crunchiness of the nuts provided texture to the sweet, but not too sweet doughnut and frosting. This recipe seems complicated, but is actually very easy to make.”

In addition to the trip to meet Guarnaschelli, Harvey also received a $500 cash prize. Her winning recipe will also be professionally photographed and featured on the Fisher Nuts website, Pinterest page and in news publications nationwide.

Fourteen runners-up received a $100 gift card and a signed copy of “Old School Comfort Food: The Way I Learned to Cook” by Guarnaschelli.
