Packaging Snapshot: BillerudKorsnäs, the Swedish company that challenges conventional packaging, has collaborated with Bosch Packaging Technology to develop Sealed Paper Packaging made of BillerudKorsnäs Axello ZAP—the world’s first dust-tight, sealed all-paper packaging. Offering retailers and consumers a sustainable alternative to plastic, this packaging solution is ideal for dry food products and enhances brands while keeping pantries dust-free. Following a successful European introduction, this Sealed Paper Packaging solution from BillerudKorsnäs and Bosch makes its North American debut at PACK EXPO International 2016, November 6-9, at Chicago’s McCormick Place, Booth #E-10204.

Sealed Paper Packaging offers an appealing solution for brand owners of common staples such as flour, sugar, pasta, oats, muesli, rice, and other dry foods that are typically packaged with conventional papers. Consumers are accustomed to the dusty food particles that leak out of packages, leaving a messy residue on retail shelves, pantries and countertops. Traditional glued packages do not offer tight sealing, which enables food product to migrate between air gaps during the filling process. While plastic packaging can be tightly sealed, thereby eliminating leakage and product loss, it is a less sustainable option compared to paper.

Made from an innovative mono-material grade paper, BillerudKorsnäs Axello ZAP can give common food staples a premium brand lift with an appealing, perfectly-shaped bag that is tightly sealed to eliminate dusting, while also offering the sustainability benefit of paper versus plastic. In addition to preventing products from leaking, Sealed Paper Packaging also safeguards contents from the external threats of weevils, mites and other insects. The material has been engineered to provide an optimal balance of breathability and porosity to protect food contents while ensuring a seal-tight adhesion between the fiber and sealing agent. A video comparing the technology with conventional paper packaging illustrates the benefits of the solution.

The strong and resilient mechanical properties of BillerudKorsnäs Axello ZAP are specifically designed for the PME 4001 ZAP machine from Bosch Packaging Technology, the world’s first vertical, form, fill, and seal machine to offer a ZAP module. The module enables a partial inline application that permits a small surface area to be utilized for sealing agents to ensure a tightly-sealed package.

BillerudKorsnäs Axello ZAP paper is FDA-certified and safe for direct food contact. The paper comes from renewable primary fibers from Nordic forests that are subject to strict environmental laws to ensure proper environmental stewardship. For instance, for every tree logged, up to four new trees are planted, generating 95 percent more forests in Sweden now compared to the 1920s.

”By offering attractive dust-tight packaging that is sustainable, brand owners can elevate consumer preference for their products with Sealed Paper Packaging made of BillerudKorsnäs Axello ZAP,” says Henrik Andén, head of North & Latin America, packaging paper, BillerudKorsnäs. ”It’s cleaner for the pantry, and better for the environment.”
