25 years ago… Herr’s No Salt Potato Chips were awarded a Gold Star by a Philadelphia consumer expert. The award was given by Herb Denenberg, who appeared on radio and television at the time in addition to writing a consumers column in the Philadelphia Daily News. The Gold Star was Denenberg’s highest award, given for “an unusually good product or service.”

Equally important to the quality of the chips and impressive to Denenberg was Jim S. Herr, founder of Herr Foods Inc. The consumer expert said he found it refreshing to find a head of a large firm who took pride in his company and products and who thoroughly enjoyed discussing them.
