The day before the start of iba 2012, the world’s leading bakery trade fair in Munich, Germany, Sept. 16-21, a global baking conference program on world nutrition and trends in the baking industry will take place. Iba organizers say the program will feature specific market information, experts and industry dialogue. Organized by the Zentralverband des Deutschen Bäckerhandwerks (German Bakers' Confederation), the program will showcase John Dalli, EU commissioner for Health and Consumer Protection, as the keynote speaker. The summit is being held under the patronage of the Federal Minister for Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection, Ilse Aigner, who will also give the closing address.

Simultaneously interpreted into English, the summit will also include lectures, debates and practical case studies. Other speakers include professor Klaus Töpfer, vice president of the charity Welthungerhilfe, who will discuss sustainable strategies in the fight against hunger, poverty and the destruction of the environment against a backdrop of a rising global population; professor Hans-Werner Sinn, president of the Ifo Institute for Economic Research, will look at the effects of the financial crisis on the industry and the risks of uncontrolled speculation with food prices. Moderating the summit will be professor Hannelore Daniel, director of the Research Centre for Nutrition and Food Sciences at the Technical University of Munich.
