As new food labeling laws take effect in TX and other states consider similar action, manufacturers are facing increased pressure to simplify ingredient lists. In response, Ribus Inc. is spotlighting its rice bran extract, Nu-BAKE, ahead of the 2025 International Baking Industry Exposition (IBIE), taking place September 13–17 in Las Vegas, NV. The patented ingredient offers a clean-label alternative to common synthetic emulsifiers, supporting reformulation efforts aligned with regulatory and consumer expectations.
“Brands are under mounting pressure from both regulators and consumers,” says Alicia Peirce Kasch, vice president of Ribus. “Nu-BAKE allows companies to reformulate with a plant-based, recognizable ingredient that provides similar technical benefits as synthetic additives like DATEM, sodium stearoyl lactylate, and soy lecithin, but with a clean label declaration.”
Recent legislation in TX and LA requires warning labels for more than 40 food additives, primarily synthetic dyes. While Nu-BAKE is not a dye replacement, Kasch notes that the law reflects a broader regulatory trend. National retailers such as Sam’s Club have also pledged to phase out certain synthetic ingredients from private-label products, adding urgency for manufacturers to adapt.
Nu-BAKE is a gluten-free, allergen-free rice bran extract that improves volume, texture, and shelf life in both conventional and gluten-free bakery applications. Recommended usage ranges from 0.25–1% of flour weight, depending on formulation.
“For bakers, Nu-BAKE is more than an ingredient—it’s risk mitigation,” says Kasch. “By replacing synthetic emulsifiers with our rice bran extract, brands can reduce the chance of future labeling issues, avoid consumer mistrust, and appeal to consumers’ desire for familiar, safe ingredients.”
Ribus works with research, procurement, and corporate leadership teams to support compliance and reformulation strategies. As the baking industry gathers for IBIE, the company is encouraging manufacturers to evaluate how Nu-BAKE and other clean-label solutions can support long-term product development goals.
