Sugar Association recognizes Real Sugar Day
The observance highlights U.S.-grown sugar cane and sugar beets.

The Sugar Association is recognizing National Real Sugar Day (October 15) by spotlighting the origins and functions of real sugar in food production. Established in 2022, the annual observance highlights the agricultural roots of sugar cane and sugar beets grown across the U.S., and the ingredient’s role in supporting local economies and food manufacturing.
Real sugar is one of the world’s oldest commodities and continues to serve multiple functions in food beyond sweetness. It acts as a preservative, colorant, texturing agent, and flavor balancer, making it a key ingredient in a wide range of applications.
“We are excited to celebrate the fourth National Real Sugar Day today,” says Courtney Gaine, Ph.D., RD, president and CEO of the Sugar Association. “From its deep roots on family farms to its role in local businesses, real sugar keeps traditions alive, storefronts open, and communities thriving. Behind every mealtime staple or favorite treat made with real sugar is a local job, a local business, and a local story.”
The celebration comes amid growing consumer interest in food and nutrition. According to the Sugar Association, real sugar remains a staple in both everyday and seasonal foods, from bread and jam to birthday cakes and holiday pies.
To mark the occasion, the Sugar Association encourages participation through the following activities:
- Share recipes and photos using #RealSugar and #NationalRealSugarDay.
- Explore sugar’s agricultural origins via a virtual farm-to-table tour.
- Access educational resources for parents, educators, and health professionals.
- Visit the Real Sugar SWAG store for branded merchandise.
