Kerry Group and the Monell Chemical Senses Center are honoring the significant contributions of Stephen Manheimer to the flavor and food industry during his 60-year career with the establishment of the Stephen Manheimer Scholarship in Flavor Science.
The scholarship is intended to support the next generation of flavor scientists in advancing the understanding of important aspects of taste perception; bridging research perspectives from academia and industry, to drive discovery and real-world applications.
Stephen (Steve) Manheimer is perhaps best known for the pivotal role he played in the development of his family company, J. Manheimer Inc., and for the key contributions he made to Kerry Group’s success over the past two decades. Over that entire period, Manheimer has reportedly been widely recognized across the industry for his expertise, passion, and keen interest in important scientific advances within the field.
Manheimer first became associated with Monell in the early 1970s. He joined Monell’s International Advisory Council (IAC) in 2001, and Monell’s Board in 2018, where he continues to serve. Through his longstanding service on the IAC and the board, and his philanthropy, Manheimer has had a long and deep relationship with the Monell Center.
Monell has played a key role in supporting advances in flavor science, it says, as the world’s only independent, non-profit scientific institute dedicated to interdisciplinary basic research on the senses of taste and smell. Research at the center has included a focus on the cellular and genetic underpinnings of taste and smell, and the complex interactions between our chemical senses and overall human health and wellbeing.
The Manheimer Scholarship is designed for students pursuing a Master’s or Doctoral degree in flavor science with an expressed interest in pursuing a career in the flavor or food industry, and provides for up to two years of study. Funding is intended to cover tuition, a research stipend, and expenses related to executing a research project at the Monell Center under the guidance of a faculty member.
