Technology Snapshot: A new release of Wherefour’s food and beverage traceability and enterprise resource planning (ERP) software provides additional forecasting and planning tools to enhance inventory management and better control costs, the company announced.

Wherefour’s newest feature adds a set of material resource planning and forecasting functions, said Matt Brown, founder and CEO. A resource plan compares current inventory and what has been ordered with upcoming production needs for standing orders and purchase orders to determine whether enough material is available to meet future production requirements. The software also flags items that need to be purchased and alerts users to the lead times required to replenish that inventory and when the order needs to be placed. This feature is especially beneficial for businesses that deal with variable customer orders, such as seasonal producers, bakeries and meal delivery services, Brown said.

“Food and beverage manufacturing is all about keeping costs down through inventory management,” Brown said. “These new functions give Wherefour users additional visibility for managing their inventory cost effectively. Access to tools with the capability to crunch the numbers like this typically is restricted to ERP systems designed for very large companies. Our goals are to make powerful tools affordable for nearly any food or beverage company and design them to be as easy to use as possible.”
