Every year, as students of all ages head back to school, parents inevitably find themselves searching anew for the latest, better-for-you, healthy school snacks that their kids can pack into their lunchboxes and backpacks—snacks that feed their mind, as well as their belly. They’re searching for foods that their kids will enjoy, but that they feel good about serving them. And as we increasingly grow into a nation of snackers, more foods that ever before qualify as a “snack.” Sometimes, it just helps to narrow things down.

For the second annual Snack Food & Wholesale Bakery “Best Healthy School Snacks” contest, we gathered together some of the best healthy snack products and baked goods (to read about last year’s winner, see “‘Best Healthy School Snacks’ award winner”). These are products, released within the past year, that have controlled portion sizes and calories, and are made with nutrition-forward ingredients like healthy whole grains, vegetables, fruit, seeds and nuts. They also often feature pronounced health benefits courtesy of fiber, protein and other nutrients.
